Why not aluminum submarine?

The Soviet built titanium submarine, but why is there not aluminum submarine? Aluminum is one of the strongest per weight material, and cheaper than titanium

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Probably because submarine hulls are loaded in compression, so the primary failure mode is buckling, which is highly sensitive to a material's modulus of elasticity. Aluminum's is 1/3 that of steel,...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

There's no structural reason not to build an aluminum submarine and such have been built. It would've been a good material for small subs, if not for its low density: small boats tend to have a...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Aluminum submersibles have been built (Aluminaut). As I said earlier, I'm not a structures guy (XV may be; I don't know). I do know that people have asked "why not make a submarine or a...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Wasn't one of the reasons Ti was used by the Russians for a sub - was due to its non-magnetic properties? Are steels used for sub hulls of austenitic/non-magnetic types?

emc: An additional structural reason: Just using some common alloys: 7075T6 - 69ksi yield ....but you can't weld it (cracks at weld) 6061T6 - 40ksi and you can weld it. But when you weld it; you...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

The Russians had access to titanium; Lockheed had to arrange to smuggle the stuff out.

7075 is an aerospace grade; significant copper content makes 2000 and 7000 series vulnerable to corrosion (copper precipitates and each little grain plus electrolyte creates a battery with Al as the...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Hello everyone. I am new to this forum but am enjoying reading the threads. I have a question, which is probably silly, or already answered elsewhere, but I have wondered why are not submarine hulls...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

A submarine hull can't be light or heavy. It has to be just the right weight - as dense as water on the average. Hulls aren't just plates and rings, but T-section stiffener rings and sometimes...

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Basically you can't cold roll Aluminum to fabricate the hull due to Aluminum's stiffness. Pure and simple.

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Aluminum is very susceptible to embrittlement due to cold working. .A submarine's hull is subject to constant load changes.

Re: Why not aluminum submarine?

Fun fact: The first Soviet truly deep sea submersibles were built by Rauma Oceanics in Finland. Like the Mir featured in the Titanic movie. The tinfoil hat conspiracy theory crowd maintains that...
